Nevertheless, she feels that she is exotic, because others don’t think she fits in. Miriam is Jewish and as a reminder, she makes sure to always have on her one of the most important things to her: A necklace with three gold pendants. A Star of David that her family gave her for her birth, a chamsa, which in Judaism is also called “Miriam’s hand,” and a mezuzah, which is attached to the door frames of Jewish homes. For Miriam, home is a house where the candles burn in the chandeliers on Shabbat. Miriam’s grandparents came from Germany and Poland. Because of the Shoah, they fled to Israel and, longing for Europe, returned to Mannheim in 1956. They were part of the first generation to build Jewish communities in Germany after the war. With her “Meet a jew” project, sponsored by the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Miriam visits school classes and tells them about Jewish life in Germany. “Anyone who has met me once may find me unsympathetic, but will no longer hate me,” she is convinced. Miriam’s second home is Tel Aviv. This is not so much because of her religion, but rather because she associates the place with her grandparents, who spent half a year there until they died, and her sister still lives there today. Miriam feels at home in Mannheim, but not in Germany. In Tel Aviv, but not Israel. She has two hearts inside her, she says.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_divider color=”#000000″ _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”][/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.8.2″ _module_preset=”default”]

Miriam findet, dass sie ins Bild passt.
